Council Just Wants Our Money

I AM not alone in being outraged by the arrogant and dismissive way in which Haringey Council has yet again ridden roughshod over the views and interests of local residents.

I AM not alone in being outraged by the arrogant and dismissive way in which Haringey Council has yet again ridden roughshod over the views and interests of local residents.

The 'consultation' process appears to have been no more than window dressing designed to disguise a cunning plan to squeeze yet more income from Haringey residents who already enjoy the dubious privilege of residing in a borough with the highest council tax in London.

The answer to the council's desire to get their hands on yet more of our hard earned money may be found in the September edition of the council's own information magazine 'Haringey People'.

In an article headed 'What parking pays for...' it is stated that money raised through parking permits, fines, etc. was £550,000 in 1999, but is expected to be £1.3 million in 2000 ? a massive increase. How does the council expect to fund this massive increase? Obvious really ? through the implementation of two new CPZ schemes in the borough, almost regardless of local opinion. Residents can be fobbed-off with yet another sham consultation process which may make the council temporarily unpopular, but this will soon blow over, as always, and hey presto, we will have our funds.

Think again Haringey Council. I firmly believe that many residents are becoming increasingly fed-up with this council's high handed and profligate ways ? roll-on the next local elections.
