A village cenotaph honouring war heroes may be moved from a "sea of traffic" on a busy road junction to a more peaceful site nearby.

People in Greengates are being consulted on the relocation of the memorial as Bradford Council examines proposals to improve the junction where it stands between Harrogate Road, New Line and Apperley Lane.

But Red Cross worker Jeff Goodhall said: "It would be very sad to see it removed and I think a lot of people may feel the same. I believe everyone should be aware it is being considered. It has stood here for many years."

Today ward councillor Ann Ozolins (Idle, Lib Dem) confirmed the possibility of moving the cenotaph was being considered but said the public would be consulted before any decision was taken. She said: "A more peaceful grassed area next to the Kipling Court complex for elderly people has been suggested but no decision has been taken. In its present location it is next to a sea of traffic."

The public is being consulted on three options to improve the traffic torn junction. They all include green man crossings for an area which is so busy residents have claimed hey had to catch two buses because they were too afraid to cross the road. Coun Ozlins, deputy leader of the Council's Liberal Democrat group, said: "There has been a very long campaign for a crossing and I am delighted to see it included."

But Mr Goodhall, 55, of South View, Greengates, said he had a family connection with Fred Ward who had been killed in action in northern France in 1917 and whose name was inscribed on the monument. "A lot of young men in Greengates lost their lives," he added.

The Council is consulting the public on three options which are:

l Removing south bound traffic onto a new link road at the north east corner of the junction. There would also be a cycle route

l Improving the left turn from Harrogate Road south bound and introducing an additional lane on Harrogate Road, approaching the junction. It would mean the demolition of two Council owned properties

l Improving the left turn from Harrogate Road south bound to a lesser extent and an extra lane for turning traffic on the Harrogate Road approaches to the junction.

But Council officers admit none of them can solve the huge peak time traffic flows. The second option would mean a green man crossing could be introduced with the least effect on traffic flows say the officers.
