ONE of the many benefits of old age is noticing the changes that have occurred over the years, some beneficial, some not, but they all inevitably involve the production of extra CO2. It’s remarkably serious as at the same time our numbers have increased from just two billion in 1930 to almost eight billion now.

MY daughter is making a mural out of plastic bottle tops, and so we’re all collecting them for her, ostensibly from those in our kitchens. However I was able to pick up twenty on a local walk, and they were on over 100 discarded drink containers littering a short distance.

WE benefit from trees – they give shade and fruit, reduce flooding, clean the air, support swings and supply wood. Above all they take CO2 out of the atmosphere, give us oxygen and store the carbon for years – the same way that coal was formed in the past.
