Skyrac AC will go into their final round of the North of England Track and Field League with an outside chance of getting into the top division via the play-offs.

Having only recently entered the league, they have progressed from Division Four to consolidating their position in Division Two.

After three of this year’s four fixtures, they are third, two points behind City of York and five behind Gateshead.

Gateshead and York are likely to reach the play-offs from the north-eastern group of clubs in Division Two in which the Guiseley-based club are placed. The key fixture is Skyrac’s home match at Cleckheaton next month.

Skyrac’s success is scoring steadily across the events. However, Chris Thornton performed excellently with a second in the 800 metres (2min 0.4sec) and third in the high jump (1.60m).

In the women’s 800m, Helen Wood was second in the A-string (2:21.1), while Rebecca Harrison won the B-string in 2min 33.5sec.

Harrison then came second in the A-string 1500m (5:04.8), with Wood winning the B-string in 5:05.1.

Hannah Brown (300m A, third in 11:03.8) and Emma Inglis (B-1st) showed that the club’s strength lies in middle distance. Nonetheless, Fiona and Beth Thomas scored strongly in various throwing events.

Bingley are surprisingly struggling this season in their east-central group of Division Two. Last season they narrowly missed promotion to the top division, but now they appear doomed to relegation.

In their final fixture, on August 5 at Scunthorpe, to survive they will probably have to beat top teams, Lincoln Wellington and City of Sheffield, and hope that fourth-placed Derby have an off-day.

In Division Three, Spenborough are also struggling to stave off relegation to the bottom division. In their final match at Bury, they will need to decisively beat Burnley & Pendle to stay up.

Bradford-Airedale meanwhile are increasingly competitive, especially in the sprints, particularly when they can draw during term-time on their student athletes. Louise Royston’s 400m second-place in 60.0sec is emblematic.

Their seven-team group in Division Four includes a team from the Isle of Man.

Bradford-Airedale currently lie fifth with Salford Metropolitan but are competitive with third-placed Stockport.
