Talented teenager Annabel Mason maintained an impressive 100 per cent record with a new course best in the popular GIANT’S TOOTH race.
The three-mile New Year’s Day event, set around the woodland of Ogden Water, attracts a broad spectrum of runners.
Mason, an under-18 competitor for Wakefield, finished seventh overall but won the ladies’ section in a record time of 18min 18sec.
She headed many experienced senior male athletes and finished only a minute behind the winner.
Mason, who has won all eight of her BOFRA (British Open Fell Runners Association) races this year, was over two minutes clear of nearest ladies’ rivals Anne Johnson (Calder) and Molly Travis (Halifax).
Fellow junior James Hall (Wharfedale) was second overall, just clear of team-mate Stephen Chew and 120 others who braved the driving rain.
Max Wharton , another Calder youngster, managed sixth place in the hilly 5.8-mile HOT TODDY road race round Todmorden.
This was just behind team-mate Alex Whittem in a race that attracted a field of 278, including many from West Yorkshire.
The men’s section was narrowly won by Ian Grime (Newham & Essex) with a time of 29min 54sec, just six seconds ahead of Nick Leigh (Altrincham).
Lauren Jeska (Todmorden) was first lady home in 34:36, ahead of Sarah Cumber (Halifax) and Margaret Beever (Stainland).
