Perfect weather accompanied an excellent turnout for the first race of the Complete Runner Cross-Country League at Nunroyd Park.

Leeds City placed three of the top four among the 170 senior men, six in the top dozen and secured the first team prize with 37 points.

Holmfirth’s Matthew Pierson was beaten by Leeds’ Mauizbin Ali in 31min 54sec. Tom Adams (Ilkley Harriers) continued his excellent form in fifth place (32min 52sec), while Tim Midgley, in seventh, led four Bingley runners home in the top ten.

Holmfirth’s Katie Walshaw (23min 8sec) had a convincing women’s win ahead of clubmate Helen Berry (23min 49sec).

Keighley & Craven’s Helen Glover and Amy Green, in fourth and fifth positions, helped their team to second.

Holmfirth scored 24 points, with Keighley & Craven second on 44 and Leeds City close behind with 52.

The penultimate Yorkshire Veterans’ Athletic Association Grand Prix event also took place under Sunday’s blue skies, at Skipton’s Aireville Park.

The eighth race in the series was a tough 5.25-mile cross-country course.

Pudsey Pacers speckled the field with an impressive turnout, Karen Pickles leading the women home in a convincing 32min 44sec.

Clubmates Leanne Hague, Nicola Bradford, Diane Wood, Kath Leslie and Susanne Ransome all made the top 20 among stiff competition, not least from in-form Denise Johnson (Airedale Athletics), who was first of the over-50s and 15th overall in 42min 22sec.

Pacers flexed more muscles in the men. Darren Burnley won in 29min 37sec, and Paul Gaille, Nigel Armitage, John Marshall and Rob Samuels were also among the leading dozen.

Pudsey now lead one of the two team categories in both men and women, with Pudsey & Bramley (men’s first four to count) and Horsforth (all women to count) the only competitors.
