The Coley Canter from Shelf was cancelled due to treacherous conditions underfoot, yet on the same day a contingent of Bingley Harriers competed at Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley 10k.

The race incorporated the Northern Counties’ Championships and attracted a top-class field.

The race was won by international Tom Lancashire (Bolton United Harriers) in a course record 29min 21sec, with the next seven athletes all breaking the 30-minute barrier. Skipton’s Joe Mercer finished 36th in 31min 52sec.

Lee Athersmith was first home for Bingley in 32min 34sec, giving him 47th place.

Tim Midgley, Stuart Macdonald (third over-40) and John Convery (first over-45) were next home in 33-17, 33-25 and 33-34 respectively.

Pete Pyrah finished second over-55 in 36-49 and Mike Smith second over-65 in 40-58.

Bingley were also well represented in the ladies’ section, with Victoria Wilkinson coming third (34min 54sec) and Sarah Jarvis fifth (first over-35 in 35-51) in a race won by international steeplechaser Helen Clitheroe.

On the same day, the challenging Hot Toddy, a 5.8-mile road race, took place on the country lanes (with their accompanying hills) around Todmorden and was mainly dominated by runners from the far side of the Pennines.

The race was won by Ian Grime from Newham & Essex Beagles in 30min 20sec. Duncan Clarke (Abbey Runners) and Richard Barrett (Skipton AC), in 11th and 12th, were the first Yorkshiremen home.

Amy Green had a good win in the ladies’ section, finishing 21st (35min) out of 244.

She was ten seconds clear of Rose Edwards from Rotherham, with Sarah Cumber (Halifax Harriers) a further three seconds adrift.

Sue Becconsall (Bingley Harriers) was first female over-50 in 29th in 35-26.

Mick Hogan (Eccleshill Road Runners), 38th, Andy Hudson (St Bede’s AC), 41st, and Claire Elener (Eccleshill), 60th, took on the double whammy, having completed the tough Chevin Chase the previous day.

Sunday's Pennine 10k in Brighouse is full so there are no entries on the day.
