Bingley Harrier Alistair Brownlee has completed a nap hand of title victories in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series.

But the wins in Madrid, Washington, Kitzbuhel and London were merely the prelude to the 21-year-old’s victory this weekend in the Grand Final on Australia’s Gold Coast.

He clocked 1hr 44.51min on his way to what is effectively the 2009 world title and underlined his medal potential for the 2012 Olympics, and it later became a family double when his younger brother Jonathan took silver in the junior men’s race.

The elder Brownlee was well placed after the swim and stayed in the main chasing pack after the bike ride.

Holder Javier Gomez, Olympic champion Jan Fro-dero and Brownlee caught the leading cyclists within two laps of the run.

Brownlee and Gomez then dropped eventual bronze medallist Frodero before Brownlee surged ahead on the last lap.

The Horsforth-based victor said: “It’s absolutely amazing. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

“Even up to here, I’ve had some good races but I had no idea how it was going to go.

“I had to give it 100 per cent but I am really delighted with myself.”

Brownlee could afford to come tenth and still win the world title but the natural competitor in him shone through.

Brownlee admitted that the victory – the eighth for a Briton in the men’s elite race since 1989 – should provide a huge boost for the sport in the United Kingdom.

He said: “It’s a brilliant time for us and just shows how well this sport is going.”

Jonathan Brownlee was outpaced over the final kilometre of the run by Spain’s Mario Mola.

Brownlee junior crossed the line in 54min 50sec compared to Mola’s 54min 35sec.
