The popular Saltaire Shaker race, based next to Roberts Park, returns for a second time on Sunday, February 16 (10.30am), and one lucky runner or race marshal can win a week’s free holiday in the Pyrenees just for taking part.

Originally run last August, the winter version has been dubbed 'The Ice Age' and has teamed up with former Great Britain fell running champion Gary Devine (Pudsey & Bramley AC) to give away a break at his guest house, The Pyrenees Haven.

Gary, who manages the hotel with his wife Debbie, says: “Rather than give the holiday away to the fastest runner, we thought we should support and celebrate running by having a draw which means, no matter if you are first, last or handing out water to the runners, you have a chance of winning!”

Race organiser Paul Shack, 43, said: ”We are really pleased to have teamed up with Gary and Debbie to support a local family’s new business.

"In fact, we thought it would be great to give every entrant a ten per cent discount off a holiday just for signing up. Last time, we supported the Half Moon Café, Salt Pots and the Orange Grove. We also gave away green tea!”

The race is designed to show off the urban and rural delights of Saltaire and Shipley.

Starting from the common ground next to Roberts Park, and mostly following the Leeds-Liverpool Canal towpath, the second Saltaire Shaker hopes to be as popular as the first.

Co-organiser Michelle Smith, 45, added: "The great thing about the Ice Age is it welcomes runners of all ages and abilities, whether they run for a club or not, and has a really supportive, positive atmosphere.

"Every runner gets a professional laminated personalised number. It really is a celebration of both running and the local area!”

Shack and Smith would also like to thank Bradford City Council and the Canals and Rivers Trust, without whose help the race wouldn’t be taking place.
