Tom Adams smashed Alistair Brownlee’s course record in the Withins Skyline fell race from Penistone Park at Haworth.

From the start Adams had only 2005 winner Simon Bailey as company until the skyline run to Top Withins ruin.

From here the Ilkley Harrier was alone and powered home on the 12km course. Bailey (Mercia) just missed the old record in second place.

Race organiser Dave Woodhead said: “Adams is maturing into one of Britain’s best athletes and smashing the 2008 course record time by two minutes is only enhancing this fact.

“Remember, Alistair – 18 years old back then – had just returned from competing in the Beijing Olympics and was the world triathlon and European duathlon champion.”

Rachel Chambers of Sale Harriers led the ladies’ race all the way to finish in 50min 49sec, only two minutes outside Jo Waites’ record.

It was her first visit to Haworth Moor and her time was all the more outstanding for not wearing the best footwear.

Nick Charlesworth took the men’s over-40s title in seventh, running 1min 35sec faster than last year but two places down. He helped Wharfedale Harriers to the men’s team prizes.

Brian Stevenson (Pudsey & Bramley) was first over-50, Bryan Parkinson (Bingley) best over-60 and Malcolm Coles (Valley) quickest M70.

Lindsey Brindle (Horwich) finished second lady and Rachel Pilling (Pudsey & Bramley) third, as last year.

Evergreen Gill Myers, the current over-50s English and British fell champion, broke Vanessa Peacock’s 2005 record by 23 seconds. She also led Wharfedale Ladies to the team title.

The previous day, Wharfedale’s Sam Watson won the final BOFRA Championship fell race at Wasdale.
