Airienteers organised a well-attended weekend double-header at Chevin Forest Park, near Otley.

A night event on the Saturday was won by Leon Foster, who completed the 4.65km course just ahead of fellow Leeds runner Ian Furlong.

Sheffield’s Zachery Field was third, with Steve Watkins of Baildon fourth and Jake Field fifth.

A colour-coded day event on Sunday attracted nearly 200 runners, with the longer courses using Danefield as well as the Chevin.

The courses were well-planned by Tim and Rob Patterson and the 6.6km brown track resulted in the unusual outcome of a tie for first place.

Watkins and Jonathan Kendall shared top spot, while Dave Alcock of Guiseley was third. On the 5.4km blue course, Dave Shelley of Menston had a clean run to finish runner-up just behind veteran international Steve Whitehead of York. Andrew Kelly, also of Menston, had a good run for fourth position. Junior runner Ruaridh Mon-Williams from Ilkley won on the 3km light green course, while Marion Bowman of Horsforth headed the 2.55km orange and William Smith topped the 1.475km white.

Other leading Airienteers results were (positions in brackets): Brown course: Greg Hull (4), Mark Mon-Williams (5), Ian Furlong (8), Stuart Pitches (10), Geoff Clarke (13), Peter Jones (16), Faye Pinker (17), Alistair Fale (18); Blue course: Ian Marshall (5), Tony Carlyle (6), David Armstrong (9), Frank Kew (10), Peter Jones (17), Tim Boden (18), Cerys Jones (20 and first junior woman); Green course: Andis Celinskis (3), Guy Patterson (8), Neil Matthews (10), Wendy Carlyle (16), Will Patterson (17), Tom Crowther (19).

Light green course: Lucy Fox (8), Val Gilleard (13), Carole Paley (14), Richard Fox (19).

Orange course: Tom Needham (3), Laurence Smith (4), Sarah Moss (5).

Meanwhile, Watkins, Furlong and Alcock were the first three finishers in the latest round of Airienteers’ Night Score League at Roundhay Park. The next event in the Saturday O-Lite Series will be held at Middleton Woods, Ilkley, on February 26 – an ideal taster event for those new to orienteering.
