SIR - Steve Arloff (T&A letters, May 30) seems to think I stated that only ''leavers'' didn`t understand the implications of Brexit. Nothing could be further from the truth!

I said that a large percentage of people probably had no idea what the customs union and single market were all about at the time. I stand by that statement.

There are still a lot of people who don`t understand the implications of leaving the EU and are slowly being drip fed the truth. As for ''remainers'' not understanding why we should stay, that`s a simple one. There wasn`t a problem with the status quo but even the government's own impact assessments show that we will be worse off.

As for being motivated by immigration, I don`t recall any mention of that in my letter. If any one group of people are being targeted, it`s the so-called ''remoaners'' who, it would appear, should be quiet and accept their fate or be labelled traitors.

Nobody ever said that the EU was perfect, but to walk away from something that we know keeps us economically stable into a completely unknown economic environment is a risky strategy, sold to the public with little thought about the consequences.
