THE past year has seen a number of new spots open in Bradford city centre.

As 2020 - and the new decade dawns - here's our round-up.

Lefteris opened its doors in the former KFC unit on Tyrrel Street back in February.

The unit was given a sleek new look by the Bradford Bakery team, originally at Rawson Place, and rebranded as 'Lefteris Coffee & Tearoom'.

While Patisserie Valerie closed its branch in The Broadway in January, the huge unit was given a new lease of life towards the end of 2019 when it became Tiffin Coffee Grande

This was an expansion from its coffee shop in The Wool Exchange and close to £100,000 was spent on the unit's refurbishment.

The Bradford-based firm, one of the UK's largest independent sandwich retailers, has further plans to expand in West Yorkshire.

Indepedent coffee shop Java Joe also expanded from its main branch at the top of Wakefield Road, Dudley Hill, to another outlet in the Bradford Interchange.

On Darley Street, the Spirit of Bradford Tearoom opened in Karma, offering visitors the chance to delve into their spiritual side while enjoying a cuppa and a slice of cake.

The opening of Geek Retreat on Bank Street in October saw another empty city centre unit filled.

A unique concept for the city, it's a place where visitors - from hardcore gamers to more casual players and families - can play games.

It was also the year of the Ivegate resurgence. The once-beleaguered street has welcomed a number of new drinking spots.
The Old Crown opened at the back end of 2018 and was followed last year by The Drum Winder, the Winelodge Ivegate and the Ivegate Brewhaus.

It's understood there are more plans for the street, so it's certainly one to keep an eye on throughout the year.

It has been all change at nearby Sunbridgewells, with a number of new names popping up.

The HideOut recently opened, the Leeds-based Nomadic Beers took on the Rose & Crown, while the Horsebox Pizza Company moved into the former Pizza Loco unit. The Bacaro also opened its doors in what was Chester's.

Further up, new club The Rabbit Hole opened in the Kirkgate Shopping Centre, while the Silver Fox opened on Rawson Square.
Al's Juke Bar moved from its North Parade spot to Darley Street, while North Parade welcomed 30North towards the end of the year.

Then back at the bottom end of town, Remy International Winebar opened on Broadway and popular city centre spot City Vaults underwent a major refurbishment and extension.

And classic rock bar Nightrain opened on Queensgate, reviving the old Arena sports bar and Yates's units.

Other openings have included the much-anticipated Frankie's and Pizza Express in The Broadway, Bite Burger near The Leisure Exchange, plus the quirky and independent Plant One on Me on Upper Millergate.

And in the coming year? Plans are afoot for the former Walkabout nightclub complex to be transformed into a new church.

The city also waits with anticipation to see the revival of the landmark Odeon building as the Bradford Live venue takes shape.
