A Bradford policeman saved an elderly man from his burning house on the tenth attempt. Eight times Paul Kettlewell tried to reach the man who was trapped upstairs in the house in North View Road, East Bierley, before the fire brigade arrived and assisted the policeman.

Some 100 carpet weavers were on strike over a redeployment deal at Associated Weavers Ltd in Dudley Hill, Bradford. A lack of material saw another 25 workers in other departments laid off. Negotiations between management and the National Union of Dyers, Bleachers and Textile Workers ended in stalemate.
