Hospital porter Roy Miller nursed another ambition as he worked with patients - to become a fireman. And this week 35-year-old Roy was one of 27 new recruits who passed out with flying colours at the Fire Service and Training Academy in Birkenshaw.

Jean Forrest, 24-year-old Bradford woman famed at one time for her stock car motor-racing achievements is to bid, at Odsal on Monday, for success in a different sport - this time as a trainer and driver in horse trotting races. She had her leg amputated following a motorcycling accident in Ireland three years ago but treats her handicap lightly in her enthusiasm for the sport.
