Textile artist Caren Garfen would like to hear from women who worked at Salts Mill, to help her with an artwork to be installed in the venue.

Caren, who has had exhibitions of her work in Manchester, London’s Royal Academy of Arts and Munich, said: “I would love to hear from anyone willing to discuss their experiences or even those of their ancestors who worked in the mills.”

The questions she would like answering include: If you had children, who looked after them while you were working? How old were you when you started working at the mill? What job did you do? Do you have any photographs/postcards of that time?

“I am happy to pay for any postage if people would prefer to contact me my mail,” she added.

For 15 years, Caren hand-stitched top-of-the-range, miniature, traditional samplers for dolls houses. Her work was sold in Japan, America and the UK.

In 2007 she graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a degree in applied arts, and now works as an artist using textiles as a backdrop to create works relating to women’s issues, including domesticity and work.
