Last month’s feature about the Thornton exhibition at South Square prompted the following recollections from Edith F Leach, nee Teale, now living in Devon.

The photograph she sent in, taken before 1947, shows her sitting on her father’s knee on the doorstep of 5 South Square. In 1947 her father died and the family moved to Four Lane Ends, Fairweather Green.

She writes: “My paternal grandparents were Walter and Frances Teale, who lived at 478 Thornton Road, just across the road from South Square. They ran my dad’s sweet and cigarette shop there after his death.

“My godfather was Frank Downs, who lived at No. 476. He was disabled, and had his own clock and watch repair business.”

Edith (pictured above right) and her brother went to Thornton Grammar School. She will be returning to Thornton later this year to visit friends and relations.
