Experienced Republic of Ireland international Nick Colgan is pushing to become City’s new keeper.

Colgan is in line for an outing in the opening friendly at Farsley tomorrow night as Stuart McCall looks for a first-choice replacement for Donovan Ricketts.

Jon McLaughlin has already been signed from Harrogate Town as back-up but McCall is in the market for a senior stopper.

Rhys Evans, who had a short loan spell at Valley Parade early last season, is also in the frame after being released by Millwall and McCall is weighing up the possibilities of a loan move for a Premier League youngster.

Colgan, capped nine times by his country, has spent the last week pre-season training with City and McCall is keen to take a look at him in match conditions.

The City boss said: “We’ve had him for a week but sometimes in pre-season that’s not long enough. You’re not doing a lot of shooting or crosses and I want to see him in a game.

“He only played once last season and we need to have a look at him like he’ll be looking at us.”

Colgan, 34, played 113 games for Barnsley and was their penalty shoot-out hero in the League One play-off final win over Swansea two seasons ago, saving the decisive spot-kick from Alan Tate.

He made his last international appearance for the Republic in May 2007 in a 1-1 draw against Bolivia in Boston.

But Colgan lost his Barnsley place last season with the arrival of German Heinz Muller and was restricted to just one appearance in a 4-1 home loss to Coventry in August. Colgan left Oakwell at the end of the January transfer window to join Ipswich as cover on a short-term contract.

He did not make an appearance for the Tractor Boys and was reluctant to take up an offer to get involved with their goalkeeping coaching.

As McCall considers his keeper options, he is still in the chase for another striker.

Long-term target Michael Boulding is currently training with Rotherham along with brother Rory but has still to make up his mind where to go after leaving Mansfield.

It is understood that any deal for the in-demand Boulding may have to incorporate his brother, who also quit Field Mill following the Stags’ relegation from the league.

McCall is still monitoring events but added: “We are enquiring about other players. There are options out there and the loan route as well.

“With Omar (Daley) back now, we’ve got four strikers in training. We will be bringing in another one nearer the time so I’m not unduly concerned.”

Delroy Facey has been mentioned after his release from Gillingham.

The fact that he has only played one game in a year tells its own story. I have seen him play several times and although he is a good shot stopper, his positional play is poor. Furthermore, he was more scared of crosses than Vampires. In fact, my friend, a Tyke fan nicknamed him Dracula for that very reason!

If Rhys Evans is still available and within our budget, I would prefer him to be our new number 1. Would Alan Combe come back down or have we messed him up after his last stay?

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Rory Boulding can play up front or in goal. Why don't we approach both the Boulding brothers to come and play for us. Michael can play up front and his brother in goal. LOL

Nice one Waynus. I have heard the same re Colgan and crosses, also from a mate who is a Barnsley fan. Although he also reckons his shot stopping is up there with the best. We will see what we will see.

Listening to Radio Leeds on the way home tonight, the sports reporter announced Michael Boulding has been training with City since yesterday and is in line to play some part tomorrow night.

It looks like he is still edging his bets. He trained with Rotherham last week and now its our turn this week. Hopefully he will like what he sees and put pen to paper. Fingers crossed x

I will say it again, In Stu I (we) trust.
If Stuart managed the same way as we complained we would be right up the creek without the paddle.
I am sure that come the first game of the season we will have the team he wants. On the team sheet so far we have an impressive lineup, All we as supporters have to worry about is that the team plays to its full potential, then we will be up there as the bookies have predicted.
We HAVE to trust the manager,so all you who have slated him so far, get behind the team and the rewards will come.

Sky Sports reports:

Skysports.com understands a host of clubs are chasing Leicester striker Louis Dodds.

Dodds is considering his future at the Walkers Stadium after enjoying a loan spell at Lincoln last season (9 goals in 41 appearances).

The former England youth international was offered a new deal by Foxes chairman Milan Mandaric before the appointment of Nigel Pearson as boss, but he turned it down so that he could train with the new manager before making a decision on his future.

The 21-year-old's future has been cast into doubt after Pearson omitted him from the squad for the pre-season training camp in Slovenia.

The news has alerted a number of clubs to Dodds' possible availability this summer.

Lincoln City, Bradford, Rochdale, Cheltenham, Darlington, Port Vale and Crewe are believed to have made enquires for the talented striker and the interested suitors are hoping to strike a deal with Leicester rather than having to go down the route of a tribunal to decide a fee.

It would be a fantastic coup if we could sign both Dodds and Boulding. Competition for places up front would be amazing.

9 goals in 41 appearances! Well that's just what we need. A goalkeeper who won't come for crosses and, now, a 10 goal a season striker. We'd have more chance playing Kyle Nix up front!

Pablo, considering he scored those 9 goals in a poor Lincoln side, I think he would be a good signing. He is still very young and could learn a lot from Thorne. If Thorne could score 25 goals next season and Dodds another 15, I think we would be halfway to promotion.

That said, the report doesn't say Leicester will let him leave or that we are favourites to get him.

what no comment from sensible?: I am in Barbados myself very shortly as outlined in a previous posting:thought he would have the good grace of him to agree a meeting over a drink or two at a venue of his choice before he goes off and plays CAPTAIN PUGWASH or one of his mates-- you all know who these are!

Has he responded or agreed to meet!!! no 'cos he's still in Bingley playing with his rubber duck!

WALTER MITTY, WALTERY MITTY, WALTER MITTY! WHERE ARE YOU!

Everyone seems in a panic about signings:the deadline is 31 August and players seem in no rush to commit yet to anyone. I am not sure I like the idea of Michael Boulding effectively saying to clubs: you want me you have to have my brother as well especially when their last CV entry was--- played for a club relegated out of the league!!

SENSIBLE is dead!!

did you ever watch THE RISE AND FALL OF REGGIE PERRIN or read about JOHN STONEHOUSE.

Or even the current case!!!

NO-- he will resurrect himself in another guise-- come on WALTER MITTY-- all that sun, sea and champagne dulling the senses?-- maybe he will become just IBLE,

The best thing that ever happended to Bingley was the by pass-- now we don't have to drive past the drearist town ever created whose streets were always filled with dreary people who made those from THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN seem articulate, bright and intelligent.
