Claire Staniland’s tenacious work in defence earned her the player of the match award and helped Bingley Bees’ women’s first team gain a 3-3 draw against Otliensians in their opening league game.

Gail Day crossed for Mel Burgess to open the scoring for the Bees and Emily Lawrence made it 2-0 after Burgess and Emma Hinkles had seen shots saved.

Otliensians pulled one back before the interval and then surged 3-2 ahead in the second half, only for Lawrence to grab a deserved equaliser with her second of the game.

The Bees women’s second team kicked off with a 4-1 defeat at Heckmondwike .

Bingley were trying out a new formation which they hoped would bring midfield strength but a number of errors were to prove costly.

The Bees’ only goal came from striker Jane Sharkey, while midfield duo Emma Crawley and Janice Reid shared the player of the match award.

Bingley Bees’ men’s first team opened their season at home to local rivals Ben Rhydding Sixths and lost 3-1.

The Bees started well with some constructive hockey, led by tireless man of the match Simon Woodhead in midfield.

But a well-balanced first half edged the visitors’ way when a midfield slip wrong-footed the Bradford defence.

The second half then started badly for the Bees when they conceded a second goal within a minute and Ben Rhydding added a third before Oliver Moore pulled one back.
