Three of our local Olympic medal hopefuls will be in action in Switzerland this weekend for the next stage of the Great Britain rowing team’s preparations for London 2012.

Hebden’s Andy Hodge is part of the new-look men’s four crew that described themselves as a “work in progress” after winning gold at the first World Cup meeting of the year in Belgrade.

The presence of the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian crews in Lucerne this time will intensify the level of competition for Hodge, Tom James, Pete Reed and Alex Gregory.

“We are still working on fine-tuning the team as the London Games approaches,” said GB rowing team performance director David Tanner. Debbie Flood’s dreams of competing in a third Olympics have been revived by a late recall to the GB squad.

The Guiseley rower, who won silver medals in the women’s quad at the Athens and Beijjing games, has been drafted into the women’s eight as a replacement for the injured Lindsey Maguire.

Illness kept Flood out of the team trials and assessment session back in January but now she has the chance to stake a claim for a place in the GB team for London Olympics at the season’s second World Cup regatta.

Bradford’s Matt Wells, meanwhile, is part of a Great Britain experiment in the build-up to the Olympics.

Wells and fellow Beijing bronze medallist Tom Solesbury will race in the men’s quadruple scull alongside Stephen Rowbotham and new stroke Charles Cousins, with Marcus Bateman moving to a single.
