Paralympic archer Danielle Brown has again proved herself at the highest level.

Brown and Duncan Busby won bronze in the mixed compound team tournament on the final day of competition at the opening World Cup tournament of the year in China.

The pair beat Linda Ochoa and Julio Ricardo Fierro of Mexico 150-149 for third place in Shanghai, with France taking gold and the United States silver.

But in the women’s compound individual tournament, 24-year-old Brown had to settle for fourth position after losing on a tie-break for the second match running.

After missing out to Russian holder Albina Loginova in a one-arrow tie-break in the semi-finals, the same thing happened to the Lothersdale archer in her bronze-medal match against Diane Watson of the United States.

After their match was tied 143-143, the American shot a nine to Brown’s eight, earning her the bronze. Marcella Tonioli of Italy took gold, beating Loginova.

Great Britain team manager Barry Eley said: “It’s fantastic that Dani came home with a medal. She and Duncan shot brilliantly to beat the Mexicans and thoroughly deserved third place.

“But she really deserved something to show for her superb efforts in the individual event and, rather than reflect on what nearly was, I’m sure she’ll be full of confidence at how well she performed against top-class opposition.

“She’s fully worthy of her place in the top four and has had a great week.”

All this happened after Brown had made a stunning start as she topped the women’s compound standings in the qualification round.

Her score of 692 from 72 arrows gave her a one-point advantage over Ochoa, while sister Georgie went through to the qualifying rounds in 46th place with 644 points.

Eley said: “This is continuing the terrific start to the year she (Dani) has made and is great news for her in the build-up to the Paralympic Games later in the year.

“She’s already the best Para women’s compound archer in the world but at every event she attends she’s proving herself one of the best compounders among all archers.”

The trip to Shanghai followed Brown’s quarter-final place at the Arizona Cup tournament in the United States.

She also won silver in the women’s compound tournament alongside Mel Clarke and Pippa Britton.

The former South Craven School pupil is competing in the Paralympics test event at Woolwich Barracks alongside Phil Bottomley from Shipley this weekend.
