BRADFORD pupils won seven medals at the West Yorkshire School Games Summer Festival, including a competition-best number of golds.

The city's five golds were, however, matched by Kirklees as districts competed across 11 sports at Leeds Beckett University's Headingley Campus.

The haul meant Bradford were third in the medal table, ahead of Wakefield and tied with Calderdale, but placed above them due to the number of gold medals.

Cheerleading was the city's most successful sport, with Appleton B and Tong claiming gold medals, while Appleton's A team emerged with a bronze.

Crossflatts' under-11 boys' football team, Baildon Church of England's Year Five and Six tag rugby team and Sandal Primary's under-nine advanced gymnastics' team were the other gold medallists for Bradford.

Meanwhile, Dixons made it seven medals for the week when they came third in the under-11 mixed tri-golf competition.

The Games were officially opened by former Team GB athlete Emily Freeman, and 1,200 children took part, leading organisers Yorkshire Sport Foundation to deem it a huge success.

Nigel Harrison, the foundation's chief executive, said: "I'd like to congratulate all the schools who took part in what was a brilliant day of competitive sport.

"The School Games isn't possible without the support of a team of volunteers and I'd like to thank everyone who gave up their time to make the day such a success."
