ROD Heyhoe, secretary of the Institute of Groundsmanship's (IOG) Yorkshire branch, knows that the resignation of chairman David Robinson means there will be big boots to fill.

In his report to the group's annual meeting at Cleckheaton Sports Club next Wednesday (7.30pm), Heyhoe writes: "David puts lots of time and energy into branch affairs.

"He is a director of the IOG and committee member, representing the IOG on the Yorkshire Cricket Board's groundsmans' association committee.

"He will be a hard act to follow (as chairman). The quiz will never be the same again. We will miss his wit, humour, commitment and encouragement to the cause at our meetings."

However, Heyhoe has also been able to report on a membership of over 200 and record attendances at meetings, which includes many younger groundsmen.

He said: "Your committee believe that we are here to help all groundsmen – from professionals to amateur volunteers – to raise their profile, improve their knowledge and the playing surfaces in their respective sports and pastimes."

Guest speaker at the annual meeting will be Jason Booth, IOG national manager of the ground and natural turf improvement programme, who is the former groundsman at Headingley Carnegie.

There will also be the quiz and the usual free supper.
