Bingley Bees men’s first team went 2-0 up inside ten minutes in their League Cup tie against Brigg-3 at Scunthorpe but ended up losing 4-2.

Matthew Clough scored first from the penalty spot after Matthew Shepherd’s flick was stopped illegally on the line.

Chris Silbaberg then put the visitors further ahead when he found himself unmarked from a rebound off a post.

However, Brigg re-arranged their midfield to good effect and they were 3-2 in front by half-time.

The Bees had a number of penetrations into the D but were unable to convert the pressure into goals.

Then a rare error by stand-in keeper Bill Livingstone gave Brigg their fourth goal.

The visitors went down to ten men after an injury to Shepherd and no amount of pressure could bring them back into the game.

Good performances for the Bees came from Mark Greenbank, in a new role at left back, Ben Clough, in defence and attack, and Robbie Manning.

Bingley Bees women’s first team lost 4-1 at home to Ben Rhydding-2 in the Yorkshire Premier Division.

A motivating team talk from captain Kirsty Matthews inspired the Bees into playing their best hockey of the season so far.

The defence, particularly Jenny Bone, linked well with midfield and winger Gail Day made some speedy runs and excellent crosses into the D.

There were no goals in the first half but Ben Rhydding changed formation at half-time and took an early lead, keeper Matthews getting a hand to a penalty flick but being unable to keep it out of the net.

Two more goals were scored by Ben Rhydding before Jo Geldard scored the Bees only goal from what appeared to be an impossible angle after a super pass from Mel Burgess.

Man of the match was the tenacious Matthews.

Bingley Bees-2 went top of Yorkshire Women’s Division Four following a high-pressure 1-1 draw at Ben Rhydding-4.

The Bees starting strongly, forcing four penalty corners in the opening 20 minutes as they looked to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

A deflected ball from Sharon Stamp made it through to the back of the net but was disallowed after a waist-high touch by Emma Hinkles en route.

Then, in even crueller fashion, the ball was again travelling into the net following a great effort from Sian Porter when the whistle blew for half-time!

The Bees found it tough to keep possession in the second half as Ben Rhydding played a full press attack and defended in numbers.

Nevertheless the visitors’ top goal-scorer Jane Sharkey scored after an excellent ball in from newcomer Rachel Belk but with ten minutes to go, Ben Rhydding equalised.

The Bees’ player of the match was forward Janice Reid, who, although trying a new position on the right, was still seen on the left and in defence.
