Bradford Seconds made a whirlwind start against Leeds Carnegie Adel Fifths, scoring three in the first five minutes.

With the hosts controlling midfield through Joe Bartholomew, Adel’s keeper had to make first-class saves in the 23rd and 31st minutes before the visitors surprisingly pulled a goal back.

However, Bradford made a similar storming opening to the second half, with two goals in two minutes.

Adel scored again but Bradford killed off a potential comeback with two more goals worked through youngsters Guy Sutcliffe, Daniel Stubley and Tom McGowan after Bartholomew went off with severe cramp.

On Sunday, a combined Bradford second and third team drew 2-2 at Sheffield Hallam in the Yorkshire Hockey C Cup only to go out 4-3 on penalty strokes in a bad-tempered affair.

Sheffield scored the opening goal and would have extended their lead were it not for Charlie Western in the Bradford goal.

The visitors then gained a shock equaliser through Paul Bateson.

This led to Sheffield’s first warning by Bradford’s umpire.

In the second half as the tackles became fiercer, Bradford scored a stunning goal, again against the run of play.

Tempers then started to boil over as Sheffield were behind in a game they should have been winning comfortably.

With eight minutes left, the Sheffield umpire called both captains together to give each team a green card for bad behaviour.

Bradford heeded the warning but within a minute, Sheffield were down to ten men as the Bradford umpire yellow carded Sheffield’s captain for questioning a decision in an inappropriate manner.

Two minutes later, the Bradford umpire showed another yellow to a Sheffield player for foul and abusive language and, as the player walked away continuing to swear, the official changed the card colour to red.

Sheffield equalised with two minutes left but Bradford then missed two gilt-edged chances to win the game in normal time.

Bradford Firsts went to Rotherham with a depleted side due to illness and injury and were beaten 2-0.

Bingley Bees men made it five wins from six games by beating Wakefield Sixths 2-0 after solid defensive work was combined with structured attacking play.

The skills of younger members Bill Livingstone, Stephen Booth and Mark Greenbank shone through.

Matthew Clough opened the scoring from open play after 15 minutes and added another in the second half thanks to Robbie Manning and Khalid Naseem.

Bees Ladies’ Seconds needed a rousing half-time team talk from Jo Dean to see off Heckmondwike 3-1.

Incisive passing and structured play culminated in a fantastic first goal by Lucy Walsh.

Nerves settled, Emma Hinkles capitalised on a rebound from her own shot to make it 2-0.

Bees lost captain Jenny Bone with a badly-twisted knee and Heckmondwike scored but Jane Sharkey then made it 3-1.
