Bradford/Halifax girls under-14s hockey team gave high-fliers Brigg a real scare before going down 1-0.

Bradford got off to a good start, defending well against a formidable attack.

Brigg broke away to score the only game after 15 minutes. The whole team worked hard to keep the score down.

Bradford recorded their best result of the day in the next match, beating Slazengers 2-0.

The team worked as a unit and short passes helped to keep possession of the ball.

The opening goal came from a Bradford/Halifax hit-out. The ball was sent wide down the right to Abbygail Robertshaw, who flew past two Slazenger players and passed to the unmarked Steph Jones in the centre. She carried the ball into the D and scored with a lovely shot.

The second goal followed soon after, with Jones again finding herself unmarked and she arrowed down the centre before finishing clinically.

A disappointing third game saw Bradford lose 3-0 to Rotherham.

Some good defending from short corners prevented several goal-scoring opportunities but Rotherham were just too strong and are certain to finish in the play-off positions.

All other fixtures were postponed at the weekend due to the wintry weather.

* Bradford youngsters Daniel Stubley (15) and Mathew Stubley (12) travelled to Doncaster to umpire at an under-14 girls meeting and completed the England Hockey ‘Pathway to Excellence’ course under the guidance of the Young Umpires Action Group (YUAG).

Both boys have been asked by the YUAG to umpire at the Yorkshire round of the national mini hockey championships on March 15.

Bradford hockey club have a strong tradition of developing umpires and several other young players are showing interest in this side of the game.
