ILKLEY veteran Barry Turnbull produced an outstanding day's bowling to win six games and take the Guardian Merit on a hot day at Guiseley.

The 74-year-old saved his best game until last, leading superbly to beat Chris Sims 21-12 in the final.

Sims also played well all day, especially when pulling out the bowl of the day at 20-19 up but laid two down against Paul Hillam (Ilkley) in the semi-final.

He played one inside two close bowls from Hillam, who really must have thought he had done enough to get home.

Quarter-finals: Barry Turnbull (Ilkley) 21 David Norris (Guiseley) 19, Bob Ramsden (Baildon) 21 John Chippindale (Wharfemeadows) 15, Chris Sims (Grove Hill) 21 Vince Pickersgill (Ilkley) 16, Paul Hillam (Ilkley) 21 Andy Newell (Rufford) 13. Semi-finals: Turnbull 21 Ramsden 13, Sims 21 Hillam 19. Final: Turnbull 21 Sims 12.
