Scott Waites aims to derail the Flying Scotsman in the second round of the prestigious PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts tonight.

Bradford-born Waites faces Gary Anderson in the next stage of the televised showdown at Wolverhampton with a quarter-final place up for grabs.

The 32-year-old Waites, alias Scotty 2 Hotty, booked his place through the group stages after a stunning 5-0 whitewash win over Wayne Mardle.

Waites was in superb form with an average of 100 over the five legs, opening up with a 13-darter and never letting the former PDC world finalist into the game.

A maximum in leg four pushed him further ahead and he had enough breathing space to miss six darts at a double before sealing the leg.

Mardle responded with a 180 of his own in the fifth but Waites denied him a shot at a 94 finish by taking out a superb 140 to seal the victory.

Waites said: “Wayne started well in the first leg but I turned it around. It’s a fantastic result for me.”

Mardle held his hand up and admitted: “Scott was class and I didn’t put him under enough pressure.”

Waites has bounced back well after losing his opening match to Simon Whitlock. He was 4-2 up but the Australian clawed his way back to steal victory with a stunning 142 check-out.

That left him the 2007 Dutch Open champion needing two wins to qualify and having seen off Ted Hankey 5-3, Waites blitzed his way past Mardle to guarantee a minimum £7,500 prize money.

The in-form Anderson presents tough opposition. He won all three of his group games and recently reached the quarter-finals of the Las Vegas Desert Classic before losing to Phil Taylor.

But Waites could get the chance of revenge against Whitlock if he can get through.

Whitlock or Steve Beaton await the winner in the last eight tomorrow.
