Bradford’s Tommy Hawthorn is flying out to South Africa next week to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Challenge.

The 18-year-old will set out to Johannesburg on Monday, and will be fighting in the senior 74kg category in both freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines.

His father Jimmy, who is a world medallist five times over, is also travelling as a Welsh coach.

Although Tommy is still a junior, he has the potential to win a medal, despite facing opposition from such strong countries as India, Canada, Pakistan and those on the African continent.

The competition runs from December 4-8.
