QUEST Taekwondo coach Jacob Barnett is a British champion.

The Baildon teenager claimed some notable scalps in winning the advanced senior Olympic -68kg category at Manchester National Cycling Centre.

In the quarter-finals, he defeated top seed Ross Weir 18-4 before beating full-timer Tony Stephenson – a 2014 Commonwealth Championship bronze medallist – 13-10 and former full-timer and Great Britain member Jamie Abley 16-9.

Also winning gold was fellow Quest and 19-year-old Leeds Beckett University student Harriet Akeroyd from Settle, who won the advanced senior -53kg category.

It proved a great championship for Quest Baildon members as, Barnett apart, Karl Harris (Cottingley) won a silver and Rebecca Weir (Baildon) a bronze, while Liam Burdock (Silsden) was a quarter-finalist.

Harris, 14, was runner-up in the cadet male advanced -57kg category.

Having come through his semi-final 18-15, he faced Will Tumber, who represented Great Britain in the Cadet European Championships in France earlier this year.

Unfazed, Harris – who was only taking part in his third competition of the year after a football-related injury – swapped the lead with Tumber until the last seconds before losing 13-9.

Weir won bronze in the cadet female advanced -37kg category, bowing out 17-12 to her leggy opponent in the semi-finals.

However, the 12-year-old Great Britain Cadet Development programme member was leading with 40 seconds to go before she was caught with two three-point head-shots, the second of which came because she was forced to go on the attack, being two points down.

Burdock, 13, was competing in the cadet male advanced -33kg category, having won at the World Children's Taekwondo Festival in Korea last month.

He led early on in Manchester and gave a good performance before bowing out 15-10 in the last eight.

Also competing for Quest Baildon was eight-year-old Felix Tipping, who only took up the sport a year ago and reached the last 32 of the children male novice -30kg category before missing out to a more experienced opponent.

Barnett said: "I am really pleased with everyone's performance. They have all shown great commitment in their preparation for 'nationals' and I know they will learn from their experience and take it forward to their next tournament."

That is the International Masters in Bonn today, followed by the Quest Taekwondo Open Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Sunday, November 15.

In total, 27 Quest Taekwondo members competed at Manchester, being fifth out of 58 teams in the advanced category and 11th out of 72 when the novice category was added.

All five Quest Baildon members train at Titus Salt School, where there are sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays (7-8.30pm).
