Jack Sunderland’s bid for the vacant international middleweight title at the Barnsley Metrodome was ended by a bad cut under his right eye.
Sunderland, from Drighlington, was stopped before the start of the fifth round of his bout with home fighter Matthew Mallin.
The 22-year-old, who had won his previous four, picked up the cut in the second and it got worse.
He said: “The better man won on the night. I want to thank my loyal supporters who came to see me.”
