Not all of West Yorkshire’s Olympic hopefuls have crossed the finish line yet.

The 2012 Games are now just over six months away but of the district’s anticipated seven representatives, only two currently have their places confirmed.

London is definitely calling for triathletes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, who have already met the British standard qualification criteria after accruing enough points during the World Championship Series.

The Bingley Harriers Athletics Club pair sealed their places at the Games during the London round last August, when world champion Alistair, 23, finished first and Jonathan, 21, came third.

Cyclist Lizzie Armitstead is almost guaranteed to be there too, as she is currently the second highest from the UK, and ninth overall, in the world tour rankings.

The top four British cyclists, as of May 31 this year, will form the 140km road race team, of which 23-year-old Armitstead is expected to be the lead rider.

Hopes are high for the Otley-born racer, who is seen as Britain’s best chance of retaining the road race crown won by Nicole Cooke four years ago in Beijing.

But for the rest, the Olympic dream isn’t yet a reality.

Perhaps most uncertain is the fate of the region’s rowers, who began a series of meetings on which qualification will be decided with an endurance trial in Lincolnshire last month.

Britain will compete in 13 out of 14 rowing events in London, but Guiseley’s Debbie Flood, Andy Hodge, who grew up in Skipton, and Bradford’s Matt Wells won’t be able to book their places until March, when the senior trials culminate with an event on the Olympic course at Eton Dorney.

Former Bradford College student Nicole Adams is a strong contender not just to qualify, but to win a medal in the inaugural female boxing category.

The Leeds flyweight won gold at the European Amateur Boxing Championships in Rotterdam last October.

That triumph has set her up perfectly for the 2012 Women’s World Boxing Championships in China in May, where she is expected to confirm her place as one of only three female boxers in Team GB.

Until then though, it’ll be a nervous wait for those hopefuls yet to cross that finish line.
