Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club member Colin Campbell won two medals in the World Police and Fire Games in New York – despite an exhausting schedule.

Hurricane Irene meant that the six-day event was shortened by two days and policeman Campbell had to play seven matches in two days prior to finals day.

Nevertheless, the left-hander picked up a silver medal in the Grand Masters men’s doubles alongside Huddersfield’s Colin Mackenzie, where they lost to a Finn and a Romanian, and a bronze medal in the Grand Masters C singles.

There Campbell lost a champions tie-break 10-7 to a German.

The World Police/Fire Games are held every two years around the world, and is the second largest event after the summer Olympics, attracting 17,000 athletes to 80 events.

There were 260 tennis players competing on two sites, the main one of which was Randall’s Island, the home of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.

But Campbell did get to chat with McEnroe’s long-time doubles partner Peter Fleming, who was practising for the US Open Seniors.
