Asa Briggs A won the HOWARTH CUP for the first time since 2006 after beating Guiseley 210-198 in the final at Brighouse Sports.

Stuart King (21-12) and Ashley Southwell (21-19) enabled Asa to make the brighter start but Guiseley recovered thanks to Joe Stockdale (21-16) and Mick Hall (21-18) to reduce the deficit to just three chalks.

Tom Cater played superbly for Guiseley to win 21-13 and put his side in front by five, only for Alan Forrest’s 21-16 success to bring the scores level after six jacks.

Victories for Andy Southwell (21-15) and Mark Barnett (21-14) seemed to have put Asa in control but Andy Durkin raced into a 16-1 lead against Andy Denton to give Guiseley hope.

Denton was finding every gap until a poor lead by Durkin allowed him in, at which point the Asa player showed his class to go on and log a key 17 points.

Andrew Heenan then closed with a 21-18 win to finish the match off.

Dean Helliwell bowled well at jack number five to win 21-6 and was off the green before Malcolm Hamilton saw off Wyke’s Brian Smith 21-19, having been first jack on.

Wyke were 26 points ahead after five jacks, before Michael Walton’s 21-8 win put them in total control.
