New national junior champion Darren Tetley wasted no time celebrating his title – as he stepped straight back into the ring last night.

The 17-year-old, from Bradford’s Platinum Club, was entitled to a breather after winning the 63.5kg division at the weekend’s ABAE finals in stunning fashion.

But instead it was business as usual when he was scheduled to box on a dinner show at the Cedar Court Hotel.

Former pro Robert Nelson, who shares his training duties with brother David, said: “He’s a fit kid anyway who wants to be active all the time.

“We booked this a few weeks back and Darren just wants to perform in front of his sponsors. It’s important to him to be boxing locally.”

Tetley’s clash with Newham’s George Moughton was the final bout in Saturday’s finals at Rochester in Kent. But he delivered a punch-perfect performance that was well worth the wait.

Having weighed in five hours before, there were few signs of stiffness or impatience as Tetley set to work on his London opponent. The 29-12 verdict was the most convincing of the lot. Nelson added: “It was a long day with the weigh-in in the morning but Darren likes to watch a lot of fights so he sat with his family just chilling out.

“There were a few nerves before he got in there but I thought Darren looked a class above in the end.

“He was up against a tough kid who kept on coming at him but there were times when I thought the ref would step in. It was definitely one of the best bouts of the day.”

Three weeks from now, Tetley will be in international action for England against Scotland and Wales in the Three Nations Champ-ionships. Another impressive display there could earn him one of the six spots up for grabs in the junior Commonwealths in September.
