Bradford’s national youth champion Billy Harding had to settle for second place in the seventh round of the Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross Series at Myrtle Park, Bingley.

Harding, from Birkenshaw, continued his season-long battle with Jake Womersley and went into an early lead.

But Womersley gradually reeled him in and the pair were together through the second and third laps before the Mirfield rider then produced a lap far quicker than either of them had recorded before to break Harding’s resistance.

He went on to win by over half a minute.

Harding is still top of the standings in the youth category though, with Womersley just over 100 points behind in ninth place.

The Bingley course, boasting perfect cyclo-cross conditions of damp and slippery terrain, attracted a great turnout of over 200 riders for the five races.

The circuit mixed a long loop along the banks of the River Aire with twisting parkland and two run-ups.

Keighley’s Joe Moses celebrated his Great Britain call-up with second place in the senior race.

The younger brother of British Cycling Olympic Academy programme rider Tom will represent his country tomorrow in the first round of the Cyclo-Cross Junior World Cup Series in Koksijde, Belgium.

Former Bingley resident Rob Jebb dominated the race, winning in a time of 51min 18sec, with Moses recovering well from a mechanical problem on the first lap to claim the runners-up spot.

Elsewhere, Bradford’s Jonathan Watson won the veteran’s race, while Bronte Wheelers’ Lewis Haworth just edged out Wakefield’s Thomas Humphrey in the under-12s race.
