Keighley teenager Tom Moses won the junior race in the latest round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series in Leicestershire to strengthen his bid for the overall title.

Moses, who rides for the Wallis CHH team, was third overall last season but is favourite to clinch the 2009 competition, having won the national championships in January this year.

The 17-year-old crossed the line ten seconds ahead of Arctic Premier RT rival Alec Briggs after a race-long battle.

Previously second in the series, leader Luke Gray was absent, leaving Moses to take a 40-point lead with two rounds remaining.

It was a disappointing day for veteran Chris Young, the former British champion from Keighley who was riding for JD Cycles of Ilkley.

Young remains the series leader but was pushed off the podium into fourth spot.

Ed McParland of JD Cycles was third in the boys race to consolidate third spot in the overall rankings.

Otley’s Adela Carter took her first points of the women’s competition with second place behind runaway series leader Hannah Barnes.

Bingley’s Rob Watson stayed second in the under-23 series after his third place and trails pacesetter Tom Payton by only four points.

In the men’s section, Rob Jebb of Bingley slipped to sixth overall after being forced to retire.
