Oakbank table tennis club enjoyed a successful West Yorkshire Schools Individual Championships, held at Bradford Grammar School, with three winners and two runners-up.

The winners qualify for the English National Schools Championships to be held at Doncaster on April 25.

Under-11 girls winner Sarah Johnson (St Mary’s School), under-11 boys victor William Nash (Wilsden Primary), and under-19 boys champion Andrew Stead (Beckfoot) will all be making their debuts at the national championships.

Sarah, aged ten, has also qualified to play in the national trials championships in December and been selected to play for Yorkshire under-11s the same weekend.

William, aged nine, was a surprise winner of the West Yorkshire Schools. Oakbank table tennis club coach Hans Soova said: “It was a surprise for everybody else except those of us at Oakbank, who knew he had been playing well.

“He played excellent table tennis and kept very cool.”

Runners-up for Oakbank were Laura Mitchell (Oakbank) in the under-19 girls and Daniel Johnson (Holy Family) in the under-16 boys.
