BRADFORD CITY AA

THE Upper Wharfe is fishing well, and many members have been chasing trout at Buckden and Hubberholme. On the Ure and Aire, anglers are reporting good-sized grayling, though they remain out-of-season until today, when the coarse fishing season re-opens.

Chris Stones saw plenty of water and fly life on the River Wharfe at Burley, with two brown trout of 14 and 16 inches on flies imitating small yellow naturals. On the still-waters, Justin King fished Woodhall Lake and had small perch and roach to just under 1lb. Staveley Lakes produced a lovely dark mirror for six-year-old Mani Morris – his first carp and caught on his home-made boilies.

Ongoing work by Forest of Bradford, in conjunction with the Aire Rivers Trust and fishing clubs, including Bradford City AA, has now sprayed all giant hogweed plants along the length of the River Aire as far downstream as Keighley.

Club members should note that there is a working party at Shipton Lake this weekend, though the lake will remain open for anglers. The match at Topcliffe this weekend has been cancelled.

BRADFORD No 1 AA

Result of Sunday's veterans match at Raskelf Lake: 1 Bill Scott 40lb 8oz (F1 carp on method feeder), 2 Eric Wright 32lb, 3 Geoff Bass 28lb 6oz, 4 Fred Prudham 22lb 12oz, 5 Ian Graham 20lb 6oz.

The coarse season opens on rivers tomorrow, so all waters will be open with no bait bans in place. River levels across the region are very low, so good silver-fish catches are expected.

Tickets for Sunday's members' match on the River Nidd at Cowthorpe are available from Simon on 01274-571175. Some pegs on the River Aire at Beal will be closed tomorrow for an outside booking.

Places on the junior match at Raskelf on Saturday, June 24 are also available from Simon, with free entry for members. A rod has been found in the lake at Raskelf. Please contact the number above to arrange its return if this is yours. On the carp-fishing front, Richard Wood battled wet and windy weather at Kirklees Lagoon last week and landed a 27lb 4oz fish, known as Apple Slice.

KEIGHLEY AC

The club have issued a warning for members to be on the lookout for giant hogweed along stretches of the River Aire. Meanwhile, much respected and popular member Mick Clayton has died.

SKIPTON AA

The late Ronnie Burton’s record brown trout of 2390g from Whinnygill Reservoir stood for 71 years until it was smashed by John D Nicholl’s 3000g fish, landed from the same water on Tuesday, April 18 2017.

Now that record has been broken after an interval of 50 days by Michael Ickringill of Skipton, and this time the brownie weighed 3040g. The fish took a small portion of worm fished on light tackle and in its first run travelled half the length of the reservoir just below the surface, creating a visible bow wave. The trout was turned and, after a hectic struggle, was brought to net.

Luckily the association’s weighing scales were again to hand. A comparison of spots on photographs of the two fish more or less confirm that it was the same fish.

Result of the first Sunset Series match on the water: 1 John Leatt 1270g, 2 Graeme Waterfall 630g, 3 Kenny Wright 380g, 4 Russell Heaton 370g.

The west coast is also picking up, with bull huss, mackerel, whiting, dabs, dogfish, gurnard and smoothhound being caught, and tope making an appearance. Our next meeting is on Tuesday at the New Inn, East Bierley (8pm).
