BRADFORD No 1 AA

Well done to our team who won the River Swale Preservation Society Team Masters with 128 points. Club president Simon Foster also came second in the individual standings with 22lb 8oz. There were a number of good weights from our stretches at Maunby and Catton on this match, with chub being caught on maggot feeder.

Both of this year's carp matches at Knotford are now sold out with waiting lists in place.

With only few weeks of the river coarse season remaining, excellent reports are continuing to come in from many of the club's stretches. The River Nidd at Cowthorpe is still producing outstanding nets of chub and barbel, with some anglers catching in excess of ten chub up to over 6lb in a session. Pike anglers on the River Ure at Roecliffe have also had fish into double figures.

Warmer temperatures in the last week meant that carp were caught from all around the lake in round three of the Raskelf Winter Series on Sunday. Result: 1 James Vickerman 48lb 14oz (40 F1s on method feeder), 2 Dawid Moska 31lb 6oz, 3 Graham Jackson 29lb, 4 Fred Prudham 19lb 2oz, 5 Steve Hodson 18lb 10oz. Going into the final match on Sunday, March 26 it remains all to fish for at the top. Standings: 1 Graham Jackson 99½pts, 2 Fred Prudham 98, 3 Simon Foster 96, 4 James Vickerman 90.

Tickets for the open match on the River Nidd at Cowthorpe on Sunday, March 12 are available from Simon on 01274-571175 or Tackle 2U in Bradford. There have been a lot of reports from pike anglers fishing the club's waters over the last couple of weeks, including good fish from Kirklees, Knotford, Roecliffe and Cowthorpe.

SKIPTON AA

The river coarse fishing season comes to a close at midnight on Wednesday, March 15 and lasts until Friday, June 16. Certain restrictions apply, the main one covering baits and methods of angling. Popular baits such as maggots, bread and ground baiting are prohibited, and any accidentally-caught coarse fish must be returned to the water immediately, plus the use of keep-nets are banned.

From Saturday, March 25 (Wednesday, March 15 in Lancashire), a new season opens for brown trout, and to prevent the accidental catching of coarse fish, baits are restricted to the fly, worm and minnow. In addition, local angling clubs do not allow the removal of brown trout from the River Aire in an attempt to improve the genetics of the natural fish present.

These just an handful of the rules affecting angling, and to fully understand the various by-laws, anglers should go to www.gov.uk/freshwater-rod-fishing-rules.

We will be holding another open match this Sunday on Whinnygill Reservoir at Skipton (draw 8am, fishing 9am-1pm, entry fee £7 all in).

The water level on the reservoir has been lowered slightly to allow maintenance work to be carried out but this should not have any effect on the fishing, which has been quite good recently. Some quality roach and bream have been caught and there is always the chance of getting into the perch, rudd and carp that the water also contains.

Prospects for the River Aire this weekend do not appear to be too good following several periods of heavy rain, which has seen the river running at bank-top level recently, and the weather forecast at the moment hardly mentions any dry spells.

Even the local length of the canal has not been that well fished of late but those that have wet a line have been catching fish, although nothing of any size. The odd perch and bream to over 450g (1:0:0) have been tempted by the worm from around the basin in Skipton town centre, and this is where to fish if the weather tends to be inclement.

The match due to be held on Sunday, March 12, has been switched to the following week (March 19) owing to a double booking. The club’s watchers are still coming across anglers fishing who have not renewed their membership books, and also a few anglers who seem to think that the fishing on the entire length of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal is free as long as they hold an Environment Agency rod licence. They claim that they asked when they purchased the rod licence at the Post Office. No matter what assurance they got from the vendor, this is not the case, and the various clubs who control the fishing on the canal take a dim view of this.

Next month's trip to Hartlepool is almost full, so if you want to go you will have to act fast by ringing Dave on 07711-987833. All our dates are on Facebook. Not much is happening on the east coast as gales have kept boats in the harbour, but on the Mersey at Liverpool the odd cod are being caught, although they are petering out now. Whiting and thornbacks are also being caught. The meeting on Tuesday, March 21 is our presentation evening (it is not in April as we said last week) and there will be a buffet. BINGLEY AC

The canal is still fishing well, and there are reports of chub and bream being caught at Settler Dam. The next working party at Coppice Pond is Sunday, March 19, all volunteers welcome.
