YORKSHIRE, who included Bradford rider Euan Cameron and Alex Ridehalgh of Skipton, have broken the white rose county's own national record in retaining the boys' 3km team pursuit during the Inter-Regional Youth Championship at Newport Velodrome.

The quartet, who also featured Sam Watson (Leeds) and Jim Brown (Holmfirth), clocked 3min 21.880sec to defeat Wales by almost two-and-a-half seconds, with Eastern a further third of a second behind in third.

Team manager Ian O'Brien reckons a practice session the previous week at Manchester Velodrome laid the platform for their success.

He explained: "It is difficult in team pursuit as riders can be of different abilities and we had two stronger riders and two slightly weaker riders.

"We practice over the winter at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre but the session at Manchester Velodrome helped and we absolutely nailed it at Newport.

"I was not surprised that we won it but I was very surprised that we broke the national record as most of the quartet who held the previous record have gone on to be GB Academy riders."

Yorkshire's time in beating their 11 rivals equated to an average speed of 33.24156mph or 53.497kph.

The county's girls, who were second themselves, helped the white rose to finish second overall.

The quartet was Lily Greenhalgh (Bradford), Lucy Naylor (Skipton), Felicity Gledhill (Holmfirth) and Anna Docherty (York).

O'Brien said: "This is our best girls' result for a while and, like the boys, three of the four of them are now moving out of the age group. Lily is joining women's squad Team 22."
