THE draws for the Bradford Snooker Championships were made last week at the final of the South Bradford League snooker singles, and champion Jason Murgatroyd assisted with the draw.

Nine-time winner and holder Wayne Cooper (Undercliffe Cricket Club) was paired against Clayton Liberals' Mark Slater in a repeat of last season's final, which Cooper won 4-1.

In the other semi-final, brothers Gareth (Eccleshill Vic Cons) and Anthony (Harold Club) Green will face each other, with Gareth aiming to win his fifth title while Anthony is seeking his first, having been runner-up two years ago. These matches will both be played on Saturday, April 23 (7.45pm) at Great Horton Conservative Club.

In the pairs, the Green brothers, who were defending champions, were edged out 3-2 in their quarter-final by Undercliffe Cricket Club duo Josh Walker and Russell Morgan, who now face clubmates Cooper and Kevin Firth. Semi-finalists last season, John and Chris Wellham (Windhill Cons) aim to go at least one better when they face Eccleshill Vic Cons' Lewis Walsh and Howard Mawson.

Dates for these matches have yet to be finalised.

Walsh was in action at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds at the weekend in the quarter-finals of the Yorkshire Snooker Championships, along with fellow Bradfordian Daniel Farmer.

The quarter-final draw pitted Walsh against 2009 champion Jonathon Bagley (Leeds), who progressed 4-0 and then edged his semi-final by the skin of his teeth against Sheffield's Martin Finnigan 4-3 after the latter had missed pink for the match.

Farmer's opponent Chris Hall (Wakefield) was unable to make it on the day, so Mikey Tomlinson, who had knocked out four-time champion Cooper in the qualifiers, was his opponent in the semi-final and, although not on top form, progressed to the final 4-0.

The final between Bagley and Tomlinson will take place on Friday, May 20 at the Northern Snooker Centre (7.30pm) as part of the Yorkshire Association's presentation night.

Bradford's two teams could take a step closer to glory this weekend in the Yorkshire Inter-District League, with Division One leaders Bradford No 1 travelling to Sheffield No 1 and Division Two leaders Bradford No 2 travelling to Selby.

Sheffield are seven points behind Bradford with a game in hand, so this match is vital to both sides, with Bradford hosting Castleford No 1 in the final match on Sunday, April 24.

Victory at Selby in Bradford No 2's final game would appear to cement promotion, but with other teams yet to play their final matches, they will have to wait to see how their title aspirations go.
