JUNIOR Witter has got the boxing fraternity talking again as he prepares to have another say on the title scene.

Bradford’s former world champion is in France to fight for the European Union welterweight belt tomorrow night – and hopefully take a decisive step back into mainstream contention.

The 41-year-old takes on local favourite Ahmet El Mousaoui in Le Cannet and his return to the ring is creating ripples beyond the Cote d’Azur.

“I’ve had a lot of people coming up to me, well wishers and a lot in the sport,” he said. “Some thought I had retired because I’ve not been in the spotlight.

“There’s interest in me within boxing and that makes a difference.

“They know I see this as a stepping stone to bigger and better things but I’m not taking anything for granted. I’ve got to back it up.

“I’m pretty confident and as long as I box at my best, then I know I can beat him.”

The two-weight champion has not fought for a title since losing the British belt in 2012 with an off-colour display against Frankie Gavin, Kell Brook’s next opponent.

The excitement in their gym surrounding Brook has added to the anticipation Witter is feeling for his latest opportunity.

He added: “Kell keeps that buzz going round the place and it’s all working out pretty well for the gym at the moment.

“Now it’s my turn and I feel really sharp. I’m going to give it everything and not leave anything in the ring.

“He’s 25, so a lot younger than me, had 21 fights and lost only one. I’m fighting away from home but that’s never been a problem.

“I know I’ve got things to prove. The pressure is on me but I can handle that.”
