THE final of the 2014 Spen Masters, sponsored by P&I Hopkins Butchers, takes place on Saturday from 4.30pm.

Greg Smith (West Bromwich) and Ashley Daykin (Huddersfield), the last two All England champions, were the latest qualifiers in the £5,300 Brighouse Classic, sponsored by Limegrove Leisure.

Smith beat Jack Dyson (Huddersfield) 21-11 to qualify, while Daykin defeated Elliott McGuiness (West Bromwich) 21-18.

The qualifying continues on Friday evening, with a large Yorkshire contingent in the line-up.

Tattersley qualified with ease, with wins over Jane Bowler (Deganwy) 21-7, Glen Smith (Pudsey Littlemoor) 21-13 and Paul Gill (Clayton) 21-14, whereas Jones came through a tougher half, with wins over twice Classic winner Gary Ellis (Whitefield) 21-13, Mark Johnson (Crookesmoor) 21-17 and Neil Simpson (Ladyhill) 21-12.

Thongsbridge were crowned Yorkshire Cup winners for the second time in three years, after defeating Lower Hopton 220-187 in the final at Almondbury Libs.

It was the 2012 winners that made the better start, with Andy Farmer’s 21-4 against the legend that is Robert Hitchen helping Thongs to a 21-point lead after four jacks.

Things didn’t get any better for Lower Hopton as they only managed one winner in the middle four jacks, Thongsbridge extending their lead to 37 chalks.

Hopton carded two late winners to reduce the deficit to 33 chalks, but the Thongs fully deserved their victory.

The future of Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling looked extremely good on Saturday when three Bradford area girls played in the British Crown Green Ladies' Junior Merit at Poynton Sports Club, Cheshire.

Faye Ellis, 14, from Skipton Craven, reached the final and put up a very skilled performance against Zoe Parker (South Yorkshire) in losing 15-10.

Chloe Hirst, 16, who represents Queensbury, Halifax and New Mill, reached the semi-finals, also losing to Zoe 15-10, and Hannah Turner (Guiseley) won two of her first three games, just failing to reach the last four.

Oakenshaw C were crowned Bradford League Worthington Sports (Division Five) champions, finishing 41 points ahead of runners-up West Bradford B, despite struggling to a 13-13 draw with Thornton B in their last match on Monday.

Oakenshaw only lost one game all season – at Clayton B, who missed out on promotion by only two points as West Bradford B carded a last day 23-3 win over Bowling C to ensure the runners-up spot.

The quarter-finals of the Pairs Knockout, sponsored by Leeming & Peel Ltd, took place last Friday evening, with all matches played at Cleckheaton Sports.

The semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday, September 28, with a venue still to be confirmed.

The Farsley Winter Pairs gets underway at the end of the month, with eight qualifying dates (Sundays September 28, October 5, 12, 19th, 26, November 2, 9, plus Saturday, November 8).

Entry is fee is £12 per pair, with 12 pairs on each qualifying date, and the Grand Final will be played on Sunday, November 16.
