The Bradford Snooker Championships are now well underway and Simon Bedford has made it through to the quarter-finals of the singles following a 4-0 victory over Chris Metcalfe of Windhill Cons.

Bedford has also progressed with Chris Brannan to the last eight of the doubles.

The pair from Thornton Cons won a closely-fought encounter 3-2 against Eddie Ratcliffe and Darren Milner of East Ward Labour Club.

Bedford's Bradford team-mate Sajid Khan was also in fine form in the doubles, making a break of 85 in the first frame of their match.

Playing from On Q Snooker Centre with partner Abjid Khan, they defeated Cottingley Cons' Martin Unsworth and Andy Briggs 3-0.

This was also the scoreline by which Ilyas Khan and K Kumar from Cueball Snooker Centre progressed against Great Horton Cricket Club's Craig Smith and Damien Bentley.

The deadline for all matches in the singles and doubles is Saturday, January 27, with the draw for the quarter-finals taking place on February 1.

A one-day knockout competition is taking place on Sunday at Cue Gardens, Odsal Top.

The winner of the competition will gain the right to play one frame against Stephen Hendry at the T&A Snooker Classic at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre, Odsal on Saturday, February 24.

Entry is free for the qualifying competition and registrations will be accepted up to 10.30am on the morning, with best-of-three-frame matches starting no later than 11am.

The competition is strictly for over-18s and prize-money will be on offer for finalists and semi-finalists. For further details, contact me on 01274-815832.

Tonight, second-leg matches are being played in the preliminary round of the Flexprint Services-sponsored Hey's Trophy.

All results sheets must be sent to me this weekend, with first-round matches taking place on Thursday, February 1 and 15.

In the Yorkshire Billiards League, Bradford's two representative sides were due in action against each other last weekend but unfortunately the game had to be postponed at short notice. It will now be rearranged for later in the season.

Keighley's Chris Melling will meet New Zealander Dene O'Kane in the first qualifying round of the China Open at Pontin's Prestatyn, which starts on Tuesday.
