Marathon man Jonny Dow has retained his men’s singles title at Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club’s Closed Tennis Championship.

The 20-year-old defeated former Yorkshire player Andy Hutchinson in the final before taking part in a 24-hour tennis marathon in aid of breast cancer research.

Top Yorkshire junior Zoe Judkowski had a fantastic tournament, winning the women’s singles as well as the 16 and under and 14 and under girls’ singles crowns in The Grammar School at Leeds-sponsored championships.

Meanwhile, it was a family affair in the women’s doubles, mother and daughter Rebecca Bourdon and Charlotte Turner winning, while Charlotte also partnered club coach Alan Cutts to the mixed doubles, beating her younger sister Hannah and Dow in the final in two close tie-break sets.

Bourdon also went on to partner Penny Hunt to the women’s 40 & over doubles, and there were other exciting matches in the veterans’ events, with Philip Newton and Stephen Pelkowski beating Barry Cox and Andy Merrick 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the 45 & over men’s doubles final.

There were also some great matches in the junior events, showcasing many children who are on the regional or national LTA matrix programmes, with players from as young as six taking part.

Helen Clapham, director of external relations at The Grammar School at Leeds, said: We are delighted for the seventh year running to have sponsored this fantastic event.

“There have been some thrilling matches and it is great to see so many juniors competing and enjoying the game of tennis.”
