Yorkshire Veterans table tennis side clinched the County Championship Premier Division title after the final round of fixtures took place last weekend at Draycott TTC in Nottingham.

Yorkshire began the weekend in top spot but lost their place following an opening match defeat against defending champions Sussex. This was followed by a 10-0 whitewash against Cleveland and the scene was set for a dramatic finish with Yorkshire, Leicester and Sussex all on nine points from six matches. Crucially, Yorkshire had a four-set advantage over both of their challengers and their fate was in their own hands with one match left.

They required seven sets against Lancashire to take the title and the quartet of Chris Clinton, Richard Lightowler, Simon Pugh and Janet Adams made no mistakes as they triumphed 8-2 to finish two sets ahead of Leicestershire.

In the Bradford League Fastbats A closed a point behind Division Two leaders Unity D following an impressive 8-2 success over Pudsey A.

Tony McGowan and Craig Knowles put Fastbats 2-0 up but Steve Winnard and Doug Bartle levelled the scores at 2-2. The home side then rattled off the last six sets, with McGowan unbeaten and Knowles and Tony Hutton winning two each.
