NOT for the first time this season, Yorkshire’s bowlers discovered the virtues of patience as they took two wickets late in the afternoon session of their County Championship game against Middlesex at Scarborough.

Replying to the home side’s 406 all out, openers Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins batted with polished ease to put on 87 in 26 overs, during which time Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale had used five bowlers without success.

Then Jack Brooks claimed the first wicket when Robson’s attempted pull only skied the ball to Will Rhodes, trotting back at square leg, and he departed for 40.

Gale then withdrew Brooks from the attack and replacement Rhodes trapped Gubbins lbw for 43 when shuffling across his crease with the total on 94.

The atmosphere of the final overs before tea was transformed as almost every ball threatened a wicket. Middlesex reached the break on 95-2, with Stevie Eskinazi on five and George Bailey yet to score.
