ANDREW Gale led the way for Yorkshire as they looked to build a big lead over Sussex at Headingley.

The Tykes reached lunch at 135-3 – a lead of 138 – with Gale unbeaten on 43, needing a further 18 to register 1,000 LV= County Championship runs for the season.

Having resumed on 55-1, Gary Ballance (45) fell in the fifth over of the day as he played on off the bowling of Steve Magoffin.

At the other end, his overnight partner Adam Lyth continued to battle hard, with the England opener needing 103 balls before registering the first boundary of his innings.

He eventually fell for 39 as he chopped on looking to cut Lewis Hatchett, but Gale looked in fine form as he hit six boundaries before the session was brought to a premature close due to rain.
