Yorkshire secured a slender first-innings lead over Sussex on a record-breaking day for the Tykes.

The visitors were bowled out for 248 in their first innings, leaving the White Rose county with a lead of just three ahead of their second innings.

Having lost five wickets in the morning session, Sussex looked to attack after lunch, with Michael Yardy and Ben Brown scoring 55 in 40 balls immediately after the interval.

Their stand ended when Brown (39) – having hit Tim Bresnan for a four and six already in the same over – hooked a short ball to the waiting Ryan Sidebottom and long-leg.

Ashar Zaidi joined Yardy, and they continued to force the pace in adding 53 from just 56 deliveries before the former was adjudged LBW to Adil Rashid.

Steve Magoffin then edged his first ball through to Jonny Bairstow off Liam Plunkett, but Yardy stood firm to record a 56-ball half-century on his final appearance before retirement.

He eventually departed for 70 after dragging onto his own stumps off the bowling of Jack Brooks before Lewis Hatchett (25) was the last man to fall, top-edging a sweep off Adam Lyth to Bresnan at slip.

Earlier in the day, Yorkshire had lost their final three wickets in the space of ten balls to be bowled out for 251.

That was enough, however, to pick up the point they needed to break the record for the number of points scored in a single season since the Championship split into two divisions in 2000.
